Other Places Of Interest Outside Of Tokyo
Well, Tokyo is what I'm mainly familiar with, but
here's some info on shopping in other areas.
Yokohama
The only places I've come across are Animate, Gamers, Melon Books, Yellow Submarine, Manga No Mori, and D-Books. These stores are all located within the vicinity of the JR Yokohama station.
To Animate
- From the JR Yokohama east exit, go to the street
and head right.
- You should run into what I wanna call a "pizza-slice"
shaped building. There should be a sign listing all
the shops, including Animate, on the outside.
- Go up to the second floor.
Note: actually, someone else has written
another set of directions on how to get to the Yokohama
Animate. Try both, see what works for you.
Animate
As always, Animate sells manga, art shit, LDs, DVDs, videos, CDs, and a host of other shit. I still think they sell over-priced crap. But for fiends that gotta habit, they do accept credit cards.

To Yellow Submarine
The other stores are located on the west exit side of the JR Yokohama station. They're not too far from the station (maybe about a 10-15 minute walk), but the layout of the area makes directions a bit of a headache. So, here's the deal: I'm gonna pass the buck. Inside the underground shopping area of the JR Yokohama station is the Yokohama Tourist Information Center. They speak English, so have them explain how to get to the Tokyu Hands department store. Along the street that leads to Tokyu Hands, you'll find Yellow Submarine on the left side.
Yellow Submarine
This store is broken up into two small sections occupying the 3rd and 4th floor (or was it 4th and 5th?). Anyhow, there's not too much here. Mostly cards, RPG games, hentai PC games, hentai manga (God bless it, it's everywhere), and some other minor assorted shit. But hell, if you're in Yokohama, might as well stop by and look...
To Manga No Mori and D-Books
Once you're in the vicinity of Tokyu Hands, use this map for the locations of Manga No Mori and D-Books. Hint: D-Books is the solid red rectangle at the top of the map.
Manga No Mori
They sell regular manga, magazines, and artbooks for retail price.
D-Books
They sell a lot of doujinshi, hentai manga, and a smattering of other items (e.g. manga, CDs, etc.). Prices vary. Verge would like to point out that the door to this place is a normal sliding glass door, not the automatic kind you see everywhere else. Now that he mentions it, I do have a vague recollection of wondering why the hell Verge was just standing there (I'd been there before, so I knew it was a sliding door). =P

To Melon Books and Gamers
- Heading back from D-Books, return to the intersection with Tokyu Hands.
Sanity check: Tokyu Hands is on your right.
- Take the left at said intersection and continue down to the main street.
- At the street, head right.
Boths stores are located in the same building, which will be on your right.
Look for signs on the side of the building. Go inside and take either the
elevator or stairs up.
Melon Books
Melon Books is located on the 5th floor, and sells
doujinshi, doujinshi goods, hentai manga, artbooks, and
some other stuff for retail price.
Gamers
Gamers is split into two sections: the 3rd floor which sells video games,
and the 2nd floor which sells manga, magazines, artbooks, goods. Both
sections charge retail price.
Osaka
There's not too much I can say about Osaka, although
we did find some anime stores in Den Den Town. Den
Den Town is Osaka's version of Akihabara (and as far
as I can tell, is the bigger of the two), and is
located not far from the Namba subway station.
- From the Namba subway station, take the #1 exit.
- On the street, bear right and follow the street
until you come to a T-junction.
- Go right and you'll come to another fork.
- Now here's where my memory starts to get fuzzy.
Um, take the left street and go down until you come to
a major intersection. Yeah, that's the ticket.
- Turn right and head down until you come to another
major intersection.
- Turn right and see another street heading
back in the direction of the subway station.
Eww, these instructions are pretty shitty, huh?
Well, to try to compensate for this,
here's a 214K gif of the area surrounding Namba station.
Notice the red area with numbers. That is Namba station. Notice that the 1 is circled. That's the exit I told you about. Now notice the street to the right that has a circle on it, and the streets below that which are scribbled in. These streets and the various sidestreets and
alleys
they enclose make up Den Den Town. In this area the
three stores I remember are Disksoft Plaza, Yamagiwa
Soft, and Anime Shop Rikkusu (Ricks?). Overall, they
had some good and some not-good deals. However, we
didn't come across many stores and felt the shopping
was much better in Tokyo.
Sannomiya (Kobe)
I've been told that Sannomiya is the heart of Kobe.
Naturally, there are a vast multitude of stores selling
more shit than people could possibly buy. Of these,
I know of several worth mentioning.
Used manga stores: when I was visiting Kobe with
a friend (peace out to Masa), we swung through several
of these places. Lessee, how to get to them:
- From Hankyu Railway's Sannomiya station... ah shit,
I forget which exit to take. My bad.
Anyhow, under
the Hankyu train line is a freakin' long row of shops.
Most of them are clothes, or other non-essential isht,
but among them will be manga stores (I assume those
looking for manga will recognize said stores when they
see them.)
Animate: More of the same overpriced shit, but
what the hell, it's your yen. To get there:
- Again, from Hanky Railway's Sannomiya station...
aw, fuck it, just go ask where "sentaa puraza" (Center
Plaza) is.
Once you get there, Animate'll be on the
third floor. Oh yeah, the second floor also has a
couple manga stores, including a used manga store called
Manraku. Beside used manga, they also carry anime
CDs, LDs, DVDs, videos, and doujinshi. As I recall,
the anime prices were nothing special, but there were
some good deals on the manga.
